ER... can we say the same of linear power supplies?
Are they as inherently noisy as switch mode supplies?
Do linear supplies require all that filtering and
modern science to clean up?
THERE IS A FALLACY LURKING IN THE WEEDS:
The gist of the argument is that you can mask,
hide, smother or otherwise suppress the inherent
noise produced by a a switching power supply.
Essentially, the claim is we can render the
cancer benign through surgery.
But what if a linear supply is inherently quiet
and does not make noise in the first place, then
is there no cancer to hide, mask, smother or
render benign.
Hmmm.... what do I want ???
An analogous public policy debate rages over public utilities: do we
want more expensive, but inherently clean power; or do we want cheap,
but inherently dirty power, which we hope to clean up or render safer
using remedial technology?
Hmmm... what do I want... ?
A noisy switching mode supply rendered benign by modern technology... or
a linear supply that is inherently quiet? Gee that is a difficult
decision... but as a good, cheap ham, I KNOW the less expensive model
is the better value... right?
For me it is a no-brainer. I am willing to pay more for a cleaner, and
heavier, power supply, which obviates any concern whether the remedial
measures are sufficient or satisfactory to mask or hide the problem.
TEN-TEC CONCEDES ITS SWITCH MODE SUPPLIES MAKE NOISE.
I purchased multiple linear supplies when TenTec acknowledged the Model
963 switch mode supply produces noise outside the ham bands. T-T
Service said it was par for the course, and they only warrant it won't
make noise within the ham bands, and I must accept any noise produced
outside the ham bands, even if that means it cannot be used with any of
my three TenTec receivers for BCB and SW DX-ing !
Hmmm... what do I want?
Do I want clean power, or cleaned-up power...??
Aw, heck... YOU be the Judge. ;-)
Happy days.
