Hmmm ... OK, thanks for the uptake. Of course, it would never be as simple as all that!

I will have to read more about it because my friend did not mention such distinctions and details, and left me with the impression the big screen was pretty much just the little one writ large. He gave me an instruction book written by a third party ham (not an Elecraft employee) which appears to explain the the rig in great detail, so I will research these things more closely.

As for TenTec... my wish list is simple:

Update the Omni VII with a second receiver, and with both receivers based on the newer Eagle-RS366-Argonaut platform. Include an appropriate RF or IF or whatever output would enable a large screen spectrum scope - and while I appreciate the comments it should not run on the main computer, I would not mind if it did, as I can always get a second computer screen (one can, of course, have multiple screens on a single computer these days...) - and I would like to see it have a new 5o v, 200 w PA (like Rich DJ0IP calls for) - and it would have diversity sound in the earphones like the Orion II does - and dual speaker outputs (er, like a stereo speaker output), and have both USB and Serial ports - improve AGC and NR - give it a facelift and call it the Omni 8 - and sell loads of 'em. The large screen spectrum scope would either update constantly like ICOM rigs or the Orion II and one could tune the rig with a mouse on the screen.

But - skip the outboard panadapter box, and pump data right to a computer screen or to a computer with a large screen the way a Flex radio does. All that would get me to part with some of my hard earned brass.

Thanks for the uptake... back to the books to read what my friend forgot to tell me!
