What causes you to say that? Have you designed and built solid state RF power amps? Have you studied the design of RF power amps? Theoretically, ANYTHING is POSSIBLE, but what is PRACTICAL? Do substitute devices fit mechanically? What about impedances and drive levels? What about bias and supply voltages? What about cost?

The 444 was designed around specific devices that Motorola decided 30+ years ago were not practical, and they felt strongly enough about it to leave mfrs like Ten Tec twisting in the wind. And Ten Tec chose to cut their losses and do something different (the Herc II).
