I had that display problem with my Corsair. There is some switching logic on the frequency display board that comes into play when switching bands or modes. I found a shorted ceramic bypass capacitor that was fouling up the logic.

On the back of the older Omni radio there was a jumper used when no external VFO was attached. If That jumper is missing you will have the symptoms you describe.
