One thing to add to the soft pins and shock absorbers.

Avoid resonance.

In industry we rate the shock absorbers according to the load and the
frequency. Nealy all will dampen over a fairly wide range of frequencies,
but they will also resonate on at least one frequency. With a large array
which has a tendency to swing back and fouth it's possible to come up with a
combination that will resonate at the same low frequency. Typically the
resonance of the dfamper only has to be high enough with the mass to avoid
the natural *mechanical* resonat frequency of the system.
