I treat it just like installing a pl-259, but add a 1/2 compression
coupling. Clamp the coax in one end and the pl259 in the other. Leave enough
center conductor sticking out to allow soldering to the center pin of the
pl-259. As far as stripping back the foam you have lots of leeway.
I've used that method here with no problems and you don't have the trouble
of cleaning out the foam inside the jacket.
