There's hot wire anemometers which can have very fast response times (milliseconds or less), but which require a bit more calibration, and are sensitive to ambient temperature. This, for those that don't know, is how the mass air flow sensor in an automobile engine works. Since the aperature area is known, mass can be determined from volume and temperature.
