gives the center pin of the PL-259 as "approximately 0.156
inch (4mm) diameter".

The definitions for many (most?) connectors are part of IEC Standards. That usually means that they are quite well defined by competent engineers. Unfortunately, IEC Standards also cross-reference each other, and are so expensive that only mfrs can afford to buy them, and you can't read them if you haven't paid up.

Anyone can buy an AES Standard from the AES website, last I looked, for $10, free for AES Members.
