If memory  serves me correct the coil for 160 meters on the Hy Tower was at the
bottom of the vertical. A less efficient way to get on 160. A better way would
be to use an actual trap or a high reactance coil on top and extending it with
wire to resonate on 160.A similar method is used by Alpha Delta on their DX-A
Sloper. However on this antenna the resonance for 160 is provided from the
inductance of a tightly wound coil on a fiberglass(?) coil form. Basically one
leg is a 40 meter sloping quarter wave roughly 33 ft or so long, then the
"iso-res" coil and approximately 18 ft extender to be trimmed for the narrow
resonance on 160. An 80 meter elevated "iso res" might be kind of hefty.

Both the trap and the loading coils are pretty easy to build if we have
good data and/or construction details. Hopefully, someone can document
them well and share the data.

I recently tried to by a HyGain antenna from MFJ. It was listed oil stock, but
I got tired of waiting after a week. I then bought it from DX Engineering at a
lower cost. MFJ?s shipping charges are exorbitant. When the antenna arrived
with a missing piece, calling MFJ produced nothing - they didn?t answer the
phone. The DXEngineering folks fixed that quickly. Great customer service.

Tim has a first-rate company with super people.

I do hope someone picks up the HyGain and Cushcraft lines. They deserve good
treatment along with some updating.

The trap is nothing special.  Since it connects to the tower at the
top, it is likely resonant on 40 meters - in fact the parts list
in the MK-160A manual online shows: p/n 977234  Trap, 40 meter

This is the same 40 M trap used in both the Hy-Gain DP-5BDQ
(80/40/20/15/10 trapped dipole) and DP-2BDQ (80/40 trapped dipole).

The loading coil is also nothing special ... 4 turns per inch, 3" ID x
10" long (per the LC-160Q Product Manual online).  Originally, it was
B & W coil stock - I presume it was being made by MFJ recently.

Both approaches have significant problems:

The trap results in an inverted L that is only 25 high - very low
efficiency.  The loading coil (at high power) results in high
voltage across the insulator at the bottom of the "whip" which
is a weak point (and will melt down!).

Actually Steve, I may go that route, but there was also a 160m trap that would
attach to the top of the tower to allow you to do an Inverted-L for 160m while
still retaining the 80m use of the tower?

I have had a HyTower for years. I just replaced my 160 loading coil with one I
built myself. I found one replacement for around $200 and figured I could do
better. Give me until tomorrow and I will gather up some info for you.
