Agree for most situations, but we're also a commercial tower site here with literally hundreds of VHF/UHF/microwave transmitters going in licensed and unlicensed bands. So outdoor WiFi links aren't as good an option for us.

BTW, we learned the hard way to have lightning arrestors at each end of all our outdoor cables, even if mostly underground. And outdoor connector contacts need occasional cleaning. "Wired" contest wins have been satisfying over the years.

The AF6SA projects http://af6sa.com/projects/wrc.html do look like a great choice for a more typical QTH, thanks for the link.

There is no way I would even consider doing a 500 ft

I would do 100 hardwire from barn to tower, then
wireless for the 400 ft run.

For an out-of-box solution I'd consider the Wi-Fi
Rotator Controller designed, made and sold by AF6SA.

Eliminates the need for the ancient HyGain/CDR boxes
and gives you a nice beam direction indicator on
your web browser.
