When was the ARRL UHF Contest "born"?

I'm thinking "mid 1970's" or so. I remember being just licensed to drive and going to a hilltop to exchange my "grid" (7943) with others. 79 was my longitude and 43 was my latitude (this was the precursor to today's Maidenhead UK originated worldwide locater system).
