To tell the truth, 90% of the reason why I even do VHF+ contesting is to
make QSO's with stations hundreds of miles away. There just isn't any
excitement that compares to that.

Actually I'd settle for 25 miles on 47 and 78 GHz when I get those built,
but that's another story.
