I think your only solution is a faster processor and maybe more memory. 
Both are cheap today so I would stop wasting my time with what you have. 
Even if you get it to run, you are giving up the advantages of having a 
windows program which is dong other things at the same time, like looking 
up calls etc.

Any version of windows no based on NT will work. This means Win NT and 
WIn2000 and WIN XP will NOT work with LPT and he has no intention of making 
it work.

The chances of changing your laptop to something acceptable , especially at 
a reasonable cost, are probably zero. Get a new one or used one. Slow (my 
standards of new one but still fast enough for this) are readily available. 
You do not need the new 1 Ghz monsters. Look for a 600 Mhz Athlon or P3 
system on the used shelf. This is only a guess but I think I am right here.
