I will put my 2 cents into this question.
Over the decades, there have been evolutions in computer architectures,
processors ( both the GP CPUs and dedicated ones ), Operating Systems ( both
single threaded and multi tasking, et al ), etc.
When things get faster, real time tasks ( disks, networks, graphics and yes
CW ) move into the main CPU, then too much moves there ( including multi
tasking OSs and their many background tasks ).
Then we move tasks out to dedicated processors for real time guarenteed
performance.
This has been a repeating cycle for at least 40 years I know of.
( Yes, that's before Windoz. Back to at least Xerox PARC where GUIs were
born ).
So, for predictable real time performance, go the clean way, use an outboard
processor.
( such as the W5XD for CW ).
Using a serial interface control line doesn't help the issue, it's just
another central task to manage.
The LPT may be more useful for station control than is presently supported,
but that's another story.
