I think your 1K:8 ohm xformer is the problem.

I use the Radio Shack 270-054 Ground Loop Isolator xformers between
my sound card line output and my TS-950-SDX
phone patch input and I have plenty of audio level.  I also use leave a
Heil Pro head set on the front MIC connector without any problems.

With the 950, double pressing the LSB or USB mode buttons
cuts out the mic input so ambient room noise doesn't get
accidentally xmitted with your digital signals on the rear connections

Similarly, I have the 950 phone patch output connected to the
sound card line input through another RS 270-054 for sound
card digital modes receive.
