And for operating systems, there's absolutely nothing to be gained in a
shack PC by going to Windows XP -- in fact, Windows 98 is perfectly
adequate and easy to obtain.
So an older computer with Win98 would be (and is) my primary choice for
a
shack computer. My main shack PC is a Compaq DeskPro 600, with 256MB of
ram. It runs my logging software and a real-time weather station without
any problems (my weather station is at http:://home.kc.rr.com/nw0l/wx if
you're interested).

Win 98 & a 600 MHz computer - finally, a voice of sanity!
I always chuckle when I read of all the users having this problem or
that because they are running XP on a whiz-bang 2-GHZ machine and
something won't work. Chuckle as I read it on my e-Machine 600/Win98
that is the shack computer (along side a 366/Win98 that is the server
for my HF Remote over the internet - both share the same keyboard, video
& mouse via a IOGEAR KVM switch).
If I wanted to add a third whiz-bang - do everything machine where I
need more power for graphics or something - I have 2 additional spots on
the KVM switch. Serial ports - no problem - I have 7 on one machine and
6 on the other - using USB > serial devices that work just fine. There
are other ways to do it too....
But you just don't need a lot of computer - I run a P133/Win95
sub-notebook portable just fine - can add 2 serial ports & network with
PCMCIA cards if I need them.

RFI with neighbor and no time - use WL for casual contesting and general
logging)
