Eight will work. More than eight characters doesn't work. And no embedded
spaces in the user name or password; e.g., "ED BAINS"
won't work for a user name even though it is 8 characters and upper case.

Ditto. I've gotten it to work in mixed OS's. But I make all the names
simple and in UPPER CASE. For Example.
computer name ONE
password ONE
compurter name TWO
password TWO
Use nothing but UPPERCASE LETTERS. Keep lengths less than six (or is it
eight, I know six works). It's always work for me.
Some folks object to having their stuff renamed.
