You are certainly correct; it's not the intended function, but clearly you and
I (and probably others) have independently experienced the error.
Perhaps the program author(s) will look into this, although I don't know how
they can fix what they can't recreate. Others did not have the problem.
If you had made any log entries with the erroneous exchange format (as I did),
and you wanted to recover the QSO records and put them into a
correctly-formatted log, making the fix in the way I described might be easier
than hand-re-entering all the contact records. If you're being more casual
about the contest or had no records to save, then, no worries.
I don't believe there's an easier fix, if you already have a contest log partly
created.
Well, back to my wet-noodle @ 100W S&P effort.

That's a little too complicated for me, particularly since I am not
really
competing in the contest. This is clearly not an outcome that is
intended by
the folks at Writelog, and I have never had this happen before. There
has
got to be an easier fix than that. If I needed to get it to work
properly
for tonight, I would try it. Fortunately I'm not in too much of a
hurry.
If the program has become unstable maybe we need to do a reinstall or
something?

I fiddled around, trying to see why the program kept creating an
incorrectly-formatted exchange window ... after several attempts, the
program correctly opened a new log in the correct format.
Then, I exported the erroneous log from last night, into a .csv file,
and used Excel to edit it.
Next, I used a utility (written by KH2D)
that makes ADIF files from .csv files.
Then, finally, I imported that file into the new log session.
Voila! It's all there now, formatted correctly, and ready to add more
Qs
when the sun goes down!
A happy ending ...
