I remember when Chip, K7JA, paid me a visit in the early 80's carrying along a new Yaesu FT-101EE and broke all records in the ARRL SS by winning for the first time won both the Phone and the CW in the same year as first place high scorer. Much of this can be chalked up to a very good operator, second to a good location and rare multiplier, and lastly to the radio. The purists at the time teased Chip's use of an inexpensive "rice box" as the FT-101 was called back then. Few would even list today such a radio as something they used.
