I'm doubtful of this gain comparison. A 4-square modeled in EZNEC shows
~5.3 dBi gain at 25 degrees elevation angle over average ground in its
favored direction. A dipole at 80 feet shows ~8.6 dBi gain, also at 25
degrees, in its favored directions. The gain of a single vertical is
considerably less than either, of course. This is why a 4-square makes
good sense when you want directivity and the ability to point in different
directions, but a yagi at a good height is not a practical option.
