I would agree with your conclustion Joe.  The 4 square
does have the advantage of (almost) instantaneous 
direction change and is a good alternative if  high
supports are not available.

Place a 40M dipole at 80 ft and you will pick up another
dB or so over 60 ft.  I worked my first 300 countries on 40M
using a rotary dipole at 80 ft (full size wire on bamboo poles)
mounted on the boom of a 2L Quad.

My CC 2L40 at 95 ft plays VERY well on CW but doesn't seem to 
have the 'punch' I enjoyed with a full size 2L Delta Loop supported 
by a 20 ft boom at 120 ft aimed at 60 degrees which covered all of
Europe, Africa,  the Middle East, and the Indian Ocean, especially
on SSB.  (The CC is tuned for the CW settings).
