Mike,

You were smart to get off the tower.

I often have problems with leg cramping while hiking in the mountains,
especially on very hot and humid days. Another cramping mode occurs when I
do a lot of uphill, rest, the temperature cools down, then I start going
downhill and hit a short uphill patch -- ouch! 

I've not had much luck with bananas or potassium pills. I think they have to
be taken well in advance, perhaps 24 hour or more before the physical event.
Staying hydrated is very important and it takes a lot more water than you
might think. You should drink 1/2-liter to a liter before climbing the
tower, and if you are going to be up there for a while you should bring a
hydration pack (e.g., Camelback) with at least two more liters. Lately, I've
been filling the bag with Gatorade instead of water and have not had
problems with cramping.

Be sure to wear a hat and lots of sunblock.
