For me in lower MI about half of the states are between, 200 to 600 miles. Extend that to 800 miles and it's nearly 3/4. Except for Ca the major # of hams is under 700 miles. Max stateside is the west coast at 2000 miles. That means several antennas for distance to the W and SW Typically F/B is more important than gain, but I need short, medium and long distance from SW to W NW if we include Alaska and that's a bit more at 3000 to abt 3300 miles. IE: farther than Greenland, or Iceland It'd be a great multiplier, but few contacts.

400 km (250 miles) is hardly a definition of "domestic contesting," where one wants to work all states and provinces.

I also have my Dad's old rigs, which are also the first ones I ever used: a WRL Globe Champion 350 AM tx and a Hammarlund HQ-170 rx. I use these to occasionally play with AM with some relatively local guys (within about 400 km).
