That test report is a very valuable resource. So is the companion report on tri-banders.

It looks like a vertical is the only antenna I am going to get in my terraced 
back yard. Has anyone done a similar look at verticals where they looked at 
radials vs no radials? There are a lot of claims out there about verticals that 
work without radials. The above test looked at some of those antennas but they 
were mounted over a radial field...

Here's both a slide deck on the subject and an app note that I wrote for National Contest Journal a few years ago. That report was the "jumping off point" for my work. Note that performance of verticals is STRONGLY dependent on soil conductivity, and these documents shows that, in general, most work better if they can be roof mounted.
