I was employed by one of the "Big Three" domestic automakers for some 34
years, and I saw, first-hand, the "de-volution" of engineering thinking in
the manufacture of North American passenger cars...

When I started, it seemed the mantra in the matter of designing &
engineering was one of "...just in case"...by the end of my tenure there,
though, it had slipped down to "...just enough". I distinctly recall my
associates at the start of my career criticizing import models for that very
latter feature...in the end, we ourselves embraced it for the sake of
economy...

...And we all know only too well what position that sort of thinking
eventually placed the Big 3 into (well, one of them, anyway).
