Both diodes, when bought in quantity are inexpensive.  In terms of actual cost,
from Mouser, depending on the manufacturer, in quantities of 100 the 1N5408
goes for as little as 9.6 cents apiece.  In 100 quantity the 1N4007 goes for as
little as 3.8 cents each which is at least double what they went for about a
year ago.  As such, the 1N5408 is considerably more expensive.  However, in
terms of real money, the 1N5408 is still very inexpensive.

I stock both diodes.  For high voltage, high power applications the 1N5408 is
best.  For lower current applications, the 1N4007 is better suited.

The cost difference between a 1N4007 and a 5408 is so little that if a builder
cant afford it he should stick to analyzing his bellybutton.

Even Ameritron uses the 5408 from the 811's and up.
