Very simple question -- even simpler answer:
Because its fun.
For several years now, there have been a number of operators who have
been running packet and sending in single-operator logs. They know who
they are.
While I have never operated packet single-op, I can certainly understand
that hams who live and die by packet through the year find it a fun and
fastinating way to enjoy the hobby. Many of these operators are DXers and
not necessarily contesters.
Sweepstakes is one of the oldest and most enjoyable contests we have. It
doesn't have big scores or really high rates, so it's approachable by
many hams.
All other major contests have made provisions in their rules for assisted
operators. It is about time that sweepstakes did so as well. Better that,
than to have folks submit assisted scores as single-op, as has been done
for so many years now.
Now, if you go back, Hans, and ask the unasked question -- why bother?
The answer is exactly the same for all other contests, too. Ever since
the appearance of assisted operator categories, unassisted single ops
have posted better scores, with few exceptions.
