[CQ-Contest] 12V supply

Subject: [CQ-Contest] 12V supply
From: Ttow1@Charter.net (WD4K)

After putting up with the screw terminals and the mess around my MFJ 12v
distribution unit, the problems in inserting multiple wires into difficult
to reach screw terminals (reading glasses required :), and the occasional
reversed polarity accident...I switched to the largest rigrunner I could buy
at Dayton. I liked the meters on the mfj for a quick check but the color
leds on the RigRunner are really more effective for a quick check of status.
I also purchased 100' of #18 red/black wire from the Wireman and the result
here is terrific. The rigrunner is definitely the way to go. I found that a
few extra seconds to solder the terminals turned out to be really easier and
more dependable. I did buy the suggested Klein crimper at Home Depot as I
needed it in the toolbox anyway-so with the crimper and the solder, it is a
great addition and convenience to the shack. I have a LOT of 12v needs here
and the rigrunner is the best solution I have personally seen and since this
one is filled, I will get an additional unit. It is a neat, flexible and
dependable installation. 73, Tommy WD4K

I picked up a 12V power strip from MFJ (figured a box with a bunch of
terminals wasn't too tough to for even them, hi) that is connected to
my Astron supply on a shelf under the desk. All 12VDC connections
come from there.
I think we'll see standard 12V connectors at the same time we see
standard mic connectors :.)

I am not connected (no pun intended) with Anderson or West Mountain Radio
other than being a happy customer, but I would HIGHLY recommend the
Anderson Power Poles and something similar to the West Mountain Rig
Runner. I recently purchased one for my VHF+ hilltopping power
connections. Within a couple weeks ALL of my 12-volt equipment had Power
Poles installed on them. They are easy to install with the Gardner Bender
tool or something similar.

First, the disclaimer: I have absolutely nothing to do with the
administration of this event! So if you have comments or questions about
this contest, you should probably address them to Buddy, KC4WQ
<kc4wq@arrl.net>.

The Kentucky QSO Party is this weekend. It occurs to me that there hasn't
been any promotion of this event (that I'm aware of), other than the
listing in QST. So this is simply a plea to try to get some folks on the
air.

I am not generally a fan of contests such as this that have traditionally
had minimal participation (and that's putting it nicely). But then if
everyone avoided every contest because of poor participation, well, I
guess that would soon become a self-fulfilling prophecy. The alternative
is to encourage greater activity, which is the reason for this e-mail.

Here are the official rules:

http://www.qsl.net/ky4ky/kyqsopartyrules.html

Again, if you have questions, send them to KC4WQ--I don't even understand
the rules myself! I'm just going to try to get on for a few hours to hand
out the "rare" Jefferson County mult.

The use of the web address "www.rohntowers.com" in the ads led

Don,

There's no easy way to do this. I could do it in about four steps.

First, buy a QRZ.COM CD, then import the data (ascii delimited text) into
you favorite database program (I still use dBase IV & 5.7 though M$ Access
has captured the bulk of the market). This gives you relatively easy access
to the US callsign addresses. I'd also index the database via callsign,
you'll see why in a sec.

Then, I'd extract the calls (only) from the log(s) in question -- and do a
"unique" extract so you only get one entry for each call worked no matter
how many times you worked him. Import this list into a database that has
room for the address information.

Next, I'd write a very simple query. Start with the first record from the
extract database, find the match in the callsign database, and import the
name, address, and zip info. Continue until you reach the end of file.

Finally, excluding blanks (non-matches), print mailing labels from the
extract database.

It's actually not that tough, it sounds harder than it looks.

Why the QRZ CD? RAC is encrypted, and I don't know what format(s) the other
competitors use. However, before someone blasts me on this one, BUY IT,
don't borrow it. It would be unethical to borrow someone else's CD, copy
the data, and return it. I think they call that "stealing." If you buy it,
you are merely converting the data into a more useable format, which is
normally an acceptable use.

You can also go further (there are ways to do SQL queries to on-line
databases to get up to date information). This is just a suggested starting
point.

Subject: [CQ-Contest] mass QSL-card address-label printing?

I have bee a ham for over 12 years, and have been contesting (on and off)
for most of that time. I have also been casually chasing DX. I have only
kept a semi-accurate, semi-inclusive "log" and have never sent a QSL card in
my life. (long story)

I have turned over a new leaf and would like to QSL some (many, actually,
but not all) of my contacts, including a couple of particular contests. (I
am going through a paper-chasing phase, I think, and I like the idea,
conceptually, and am resistant to just "let it go" without trying it.)

If I order cards, and print labels, and stick them and sort them (though
they print already mostly sorted), DX cards can be bundled and shipped to
the outgoing buro real easy. However, here is my dilemma: How can I address
domestic cards for domestic contests to be mailed as postcards in an
automated way? What I mean is this: I can print the QSO labels from NA real
easy, then stick them on cards. The hard part is addressing them. Is there a
program/utility that will generate the address labels? For instance, if I
"upload" my callsign list from a contest, will it look up each call and take
the US address info and put it on a label and then print it and then look up
the next call, and so forth?

What I am trying to avoid is having to manually look up each address for,
say, an NAQP log with 800 QSOs in it, or a Sweepstakes log with 1500 QSOs in
it.

I know this looks like QSL-card "spamming" on the surface, but I am not
really envisioning/intending for it to be that (please put down your
flogging devices...).

Help? Advice?

Feel free to respond directly...

Thanks,
Don

WX3M asked:

>How can I address domestic cards for domestic contests to be >mailed as
postcards in an automated way?

There are probably lots of general-purpose logging programs that will do
this, by impoorting the CT/NA/TR/WL log info and converting it.

In my current mid-ham-radio-life-crisis VHF operating, I found the VQLog
program by EA6VQ, which is cheap and works well for VHF...I think it also
will do HF. I log all my VHF QSOs there, including ADIF-file import of my
VHF contest logs. Then I tell the program to QSL everyone new, and it
generates the QSO info label, and then automagically generates all the
needed address labels from the Callbook CDROM.

One label for the back, one for the front.

I have noticed that for some reason, when I handwrite addresses on HF cards
I answer, the scanner at the post office seems to pick up my own address
(from the front of the card) on about 1 card in 5, and mail it back to me.
Then I need to use an envelope. Argh.

There are two press releases about the NASDAQ de-listing on the Rohn web
site. They make it sound as if this is simply confusion over paying the
$8000 fee for being listed, but who knows.

I ordered some Rohn stuff from WB0W last week, and they said that on their
last order, they only received 1/3 of the material on their P.O. from
Rohn. After that, I shot a note to Steve/K7LXC (the Tower Talk moderator,
and proprietor of Champion Radio) and he said that Rohn had been having
manufacturing difficulties; for example, there would be no more Rohn 45G
available until mid-August.

So what's the scoop? Who knows...however, I just can't conceive a world
without Rohn tower.
