That is not the point: of course distance-based scoring would not be perfectly 
fair, but it is very hard to argue that it is "no fairer" than doing nothing.

I'd like to see the scoring system for the IARU contest fixed- there if you are 
on the wrong side of a zone boundary, the 3-vs-1 point scoring can change your 
score significantly.
