Being in the Broadcast business all my life, I think the Heil stuff probably
does what it was designed to do for the intended market. His market varies
more than the "professional" microphone market and therefore will
automatically have its lovers and its haters....mainly because of the many
"tailored" mics offered. Just because a mic has a tailored response that
fits a specific application does not necessarily make it a quality
professional product.....but it can still fill a need and make people happy.

I don't personally know Jim or Bob Heil but I believe that Jim's lifelong
education, research and passion for high quality audio (not always needed or
wanted in ham radio) cannot be disputed.

Having installed more XLR connectors than I ever care to remember, I can say
they would not be my first choice on a ham rig.

Jim .... I am sure everyone on the reflector values your expertise in
matters involving RFI, audio, pin 1 problems, and the like. You are a great
resource in this regard.

However, I think expressions of who is and isn't an "expert" on something
(whatever it is) is out of bounds on a reflector ostensibly devoted to
TenTec-related topics.

Yes, it is my opinion. So is Heil's self-proclaimed expert status. I know
of no one in the world of pro audio who shares that opinion. As to
marketing -- his products are cheaply made and overpriced, but he's
convinced hams that they're wonderful. That's marketing.

On the other hand, I've been honored by being named a Fellow of the Audio
Engineering Society, so my opinion may count for something. Or maybe not.
