The T32C story is both a tragedy and a good laugh at the same time.
They had a container full of FT-5000 transceivers and VL-1000 Amplifiers and
all of their beams... that got lost in transit and never arrived.
Not wanting to give up, they decided to hand carry as much equipment as they
could and just go.
Yaesu loaned them a bunch of FT-450D's and they took a couple dozen
fiberglass poles from some German antenna company (whom I happen to know
quite well), and a bunch of wire and simply improvised on site.
Yes, the antennas were ALL just a bit of wire strung over some fiberglass
poles.
They were Verticals and Vertical Dipole Arrays.
They totaled over 213K QSO's and had a ball because they had to improvise
everything, which is what we hams do better than any other group on the
planet - at least when it comes to communications.
What I always find interesting:
- No. of SSB QSO's: 88,416
- No. of CW QSO's: 102,216

I am not sure what radios the T32C folks were using, but they managed to
hear my 5 watt signal on 12 meters from the Argonaut II with my lowly trap
vertical.
