At 40 wpm, a dit time is 30 msec. So why would an 18 msec delay remove QSK even at 40 wpm.

Right -- that's the way most transceivers have worked for several
decades. But please answer my questions (previous email) about how QSK
is wonderful for you, because I don't understand how it can be above
about 18 WPM if the TX delay is 17 msec. :)
