I've tried a bunch of things, and always wind up back with a
sledge hammer. We have a lot of shale 4-6 ft down, so I once tried a
Bosch 60 lb. electric jackhammer with a ground rod driving bit. Went
down real easy until it hit the shale, and still wouldn't penetrate it.
For the clay soil here in EPA, I wait for a good rain, get out my 6
ft ladder, 8 lb. sledge and hammer away (and feel it in my arms the
next day).
