This is the way I've done it, obtained from a hints and kinks article:

1)  dig a conical (or funnel) shaped hole about a foot deep \/
2)  take a gallon of water and pour it in, let it sit about 5 min.
3)  take the 8 foot rod and push it by hand power as far in as it can
go, pull it in and out a few times, probably pushing it somewhat deeper

4)  Pull the rode completely out, and pour water into the hole left by
the rod
5)  After the water has soaked down, push the rod back in, out, in out,
etc.
6)  repeater steps 3,4,5 until the rod goes all the way in
7)  very little pounding if any is needed by a sledge hammer, depending
on soil.  About 20 mins. of work
