OK here is one that will probably cause a stir.

I built my own 72ft crank up tower when I still lived in Africa. 

I extended it to the height I wanted and then used a ladder to climb up in 
insert a 2" piece if sch 40 pipe through the tower at a heavy duty horizontal 
brace. I then climbed down and lowered the tower gently until the pipe took the 
weight of the bottom telescoping section.
This took the tension of the cable carrying most weight.

Did this for years and it made me sleep better.
