Well, when I engage the NR I can turn the RF gain down to 1 and still 
things sound noisy.  I typically run my RF gain (w/o NR) at 55 to 70 on 
40M.  AS Tim describes below, it seems like engaging the NR locks the RF 
gain at some high setting.  However, it seems much too high.

If engaging the NR lowers the threshold, then it must lower it below 
0.38 uV since I was running in that vicinity this weekend.  (I have a 
very quiet QTH and rarely use the noise blanker.)  I remember the NR 
working reasonably well on earlier firmware.  Right now, my audio NIR-12 
DSP seems to work better than the NR.
