That is all valuable information.  I want to add that my Orion II had a
problem with RF, but it was coming in via the headphone wire and the CW
paddles connected to the back.  Ferrites solved the problem--now no RFI at
full legal power, all bands, all antenna orientations.

Chopping coiled up cables is a good idea, but I ran into a problem recently when I reduced the length of my mic cable, which goes through Heil "Topless"
boom to a  W2IHY 8-Band EQ.  I suddenly had RFI on 10 meters where I had
none before. It turns out that the I chopped what was a 20' mic cable to a
length of 8', a nice quarter wave on 10, which worked much like an 8'
vertical on the bumper of a car.  A ferrite loop fixed that too.

George, This is a great lesson and thanks.

I've found on some bands more than others the proximity of the antenna to
the shack was a factor relative to this kind of problem, i.e if the beam
is
over the roof and not away from the house.  This is common sense I guess,
but it complicates the situation. And when someone says there is only one or two ways to solve the bonding challenge (grounding) I don't believe it.
There are many ways, length of braid, etc etc.

But in the end, I believe if we keep it simple.. no extra coax rolled up
behind the table/desk, as few connectors and 'things' in the line as
possible, VERY GOOD coax with first class connectors/installation, and
everything tight .. this will help any 'shack'.  Often times this isn't
the
case nor is regular maintenance a way of life.

Ever since I've had my Orion and now the Orion2 I have had RF in the mic
distorting my SSB signal on 20 meters. It only happens when I run high
power and only on 20 meters.
I presently run a O2, TT 706 mic, Ameritron AL-1500, Steppir 3 element
beam fed with 9913 coax.
I've tried every know remedy known to hams to solve this problem.
I solved it, finally, by taking the TT 706 mic apart, insulating the PC
board, and then making a pouch using my wife's kitchen foil wrap for the
PC board in the 706 mic. I left a tab on the pouch that connects to the
ground lug. The RF mic board is now shielded.
PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
Don't know why I had RF in the shack but at this point I don't care.
It doesn't help that the 706 mic has a plastic upper shell.
Maybe this will help someone else.
