Another suggestion is to run the same test after local sunset.  Most of the AM 
stations in the country have a much lower night time power and are required to 
switch to that after local sunset.
Some stations may, by virtue of using a large directional antenna array get FCC 
approval for a daytime power of 50KW but are required to switch to as low as 
500 watts at local sunset.  Give it a try and you might find that BC overload 
can be impacting your readings.
