I'm a late comer to this thread ...
I've had great luck with Matrox cards ...
and their support is great as well.
I prefer NOT to use software that combines all the
monitors into one large virtual desktop that spans
all screens. When you launch many programs that
centre their windows in the middle of the screen
(or programs that pop-up windows with alerts and
other dialogues in the centre of the screen) those
windows will split across the monitors. Yuck!
My preference is to run each monitor as a separate
monitor - and then use the features of the operating
system (in this case, Windows XP, which does a great
job with multi-monitor support) to manage the monitors.
(You'll know when you've got the setup I use ...
when the task bar at the bottom of the main screen
does NOT appear on any other screens.)
With older versions of Windows (2000 and before),
YMMV. You may be forced to use the vendors specialised
drivers and applications ... most of which you really
don't need.
I've recently picked up a number of ViewSonic VP171s
17-inch monitors. In the US these can be found on sale
for the rest of this month with a $100 rebate ...
street price should be around US $480 to $500.
Those monitors have dual analogue inputs ... as well
as DVI. I've found best results with connecting to
my video adapters using DVI (versus analogue VGA).
I've also had good luck with Samsung monitors as well.
Both the ViewSonics and Samsung LCD displays I've used
are very quiet. And the ones I've used all have 3-year
warranties - which may be something to consider as well.
