Hi
Step start is for the HV not for the filament. For my AL-1500 I designed my
own filament step start 2-3 sec delay, also this is a good practice to check
the filament voltage and the main input. In my case I got 4.85v and after
the SSR installation at the filament transformer input I got 4.75v to close
to the minimum with 240v a.c without RF output. I decided to double the
secondary wiring and now 4.95 v at tube socket.
Also the wire size for the HV transformer is under size for my taste. I also
double all of them, replaced all electrolyte capacitor for 330 uf/550v even
if the amplifier was almost new. No head room safety and now key down at 2
kw HV will drop 200 volts instead of 600 volts.

** The SB-1000 is a cost reduced AL-80A.

** According to Ameritron the AL-80B, AL-572, AL-800, AL-800H all have a
step start.
