I've had a few occasions, usually in the Pa QSO Party, when I've made
contacts with stations in another contest.
When the exchange with the "other" contest was a SN, I simply gave the same
SN as my Pa QSO Log.
The only time I've ever been questioned on it was the year I operated
portable from Somerset County. That Sunday there was also an RSGB contest
on, and I worked a lot of G stations on 10 and 15 meters. A few wondered
why my SN was so high "for a Yank," so I told them why. No problem,
everyone was happy, and we all worked each other just fine.
Of course, this was back when a hand written log was still practical.
In today's environment, with the large number of contesters running decent
computers in their shacks (be they running XP, Vista, Linux, Mac, or
CP/M-2010) that are multi-threaded in one form or another... why not just
open a second window running a different logging program for the "other"
contest? Seems to me it would be faster just to click on the "other"
window, log the contest, and then change focus back to the main window. No
problem.
Or is that too easy?

This weekend there were two fairly active state QSO parties: Oklahoma
and Virginia. I made over 80 QSOs with OK stations, but less than a
dozen with VA. Why? VA required a serial number, I was logging in my
every-day logging program, and had no real way to keep track the
serial numbers I sent (short of scribbling them on a piece of paper).
So while I'm in favor of a contest exchange that isn't necessarily
pre-determined (i.e. CQ Zone), using such an exchange hindered my
participation.
Any thoughts?
I remember seeing something in the NY QSO Party comments about serial
numbers. Note that two of the most popular state QSO parties (CA and
PA) both use serial numbers in the exchange.
I'm not lobbying for change, but just wondering how much use of serial
numbers impact casual participation in a contest. Please don't get
started about using checksums based on what the other guy sent! :-)
