If there are more than one QSO Parties listed on that File Menu, don't use 
that short cut method because, as you said, you are opening the log "blind".

Instead, use the File > Open Log selection. The database panel will come up 
with the same list of "previously used" logs listed in the window. Now when 
you single click on a QSO Party title, look at the State Party window, lower 
to the right. It will show you the state that log is setup for. Single click 
another QSO Party title to reveal the state for that log.

This might add a second or two, but you won't waste time opening the wrong 
log.
