NAQP is a perfect "training ground" for new contesters. For me it was very
much the gateway into other bigger contests.
In particular new contesters need to be able to find and hold a CQ
frequency to learn what it's like to run a frequency. Experience running a
frequency gets them excited about contesting and also turns them into
better S&P operators too, as they now know what the running guy hears and
does.
This would be very hard for a newbie 100W station to do if they had
competition from experienced contesters at legal limit for that run
frequency.
