Not to mention the cases of multi ops, people that can't remember
exactly etc.
People using whatever they want for a check has zero impact on the contest.
As the competitor copy what is sent and log it and work the next guy.
The rules do not specify that all competitors should start with QSO #1.
Starting with another number to attempt to dissuade competition probably
breaks some other type of sportsmanship rule. I have heard of people
doing this. I have no proof that it was ever done. Do your best and
let the chips fall where they may. Even if someone had 100 more
contacts than you did, you have no clue how much time they have in or if
they even intend to finish the contest, heck who knows, maybe the amp
dies or the power goes out for that station.
I would hope that everyone would start with Qso #1.

How would you know, anyway? You could look back through my records and
maybe find that I've had the W9SZ call since 1977. But you wouldn't be
able to easily find the call I had before that. Or when I was first
licensed. Would you want to spend the time to do this to everyone you
worked to find out if someone was breaking a rule by giving a
different year? I have better things to do with my time.
And the check number does not affect my score or anyone else's - that
is, if I gave a wrong section, it would possibly affect someone's
score if they only worked me in the section I was reporting. The check
is just a number to copy.
I suppose this has been asked, too, but do you have to start with the
number 1 on the contest? I know it says consecutive serial numbers,
but what if you started with 200 or 500?

Mike’s right. FFS, the League, which is the FINAL arbiter of all things ruleswise, has
said it doesn’t matter, as long as people copy what you send..
Ergo, it DOESN’T MATTER. Copy what is sent, move on to the next Q. Save your
mental energy for things that really matter.

This discussion has been going on now for what as long at the CQ-Contest
reflector has been around and yet most people still send their check right.
Just copy what is sent and move on. The data sent and received has no meaning.
It is an arbitrary part of the exchange. Why not make it your grid square.
Then it can't change and would go along well with the new ARRL operating event
for next year...............Grid squares worked!

What is the point of the ARRL stating in the rules that the check is the
year first licensed, if they really don't care what you send?

I think most people try to use their actual year licensed.
That would be a good question to ask on the entry form. What year were
you licensed. It think we all know that new hams are hard to come by and
many are not interested in contesting.

Why are so many putting so much emphasis on the CK, as anything more than
a
"randomly chosen two digit number that is consistently used throughout the
contest", having absolutely no relation to anything? ARRL has indicated it
will not enforce the CK as being "The last 2 digits of the year of first
license for either the operator or the station", and many have indicated
that they change their CK, from year to year? It certainly has little, if
any, bearing on when they were licensed?
As far as CW speed is concerned, when I call another station, I feel
obligated to try and match their speed. Sometimes this requires me to
listen to several contacts, before calling. I expect, and usually receive,
the same consideration, when I'm called? I fail to see any logic to
calling
at a much higher speed, then having to endure several repeats?
In it to win it? Not a chance
In it to have fun? Most definitely
