Ken, yes you are correct. I believe that it was in the mid 60's.
I learned the hard way that announcing your scores in public gave some the
chance to change their scores to win. There was very little the contest
committee could do other than send snail mail to claimed contacts for
verification.
After coming in second place 3 years in a row I decided to not announce my
score in public.
In 1979 I won the all band SSB for the USA.
Best to keep my mouth shut.
My score was 3.1 million. Compare that with today's scores. What a difference
technology has made.
Keep on contesting!

When I operated at K6UA in the early 1970s, I remember Dale getting on 75
meters with W7RM immediately after the contest to compare scores.  It seemed to
be an established custom when I got there so it must have started in the 1960s.

Subject: [CQ-Contest] Origin of 3830 Score Reporting

Hi,

I've been meaning to include a brief history of 3830 score reporting on the
3830scores.com web site. Personally, my history of score reporting only goes
back to the advent of the 3830 e-mail reflector on contesting.com in 1996, so
I'm not familiar with on-air reporting before that.

What's the origin of sharing claimed scores and "war stories" on 3830 kHz after
a contest? When did it start? Who started it? Thanks.
