if you are going to win - or even be competitive - under the present
rules, you must go to
two-radio operation.

Hi Bill,

I'll try not to editorialize too much on the "advantage" that SO2R ops
enjoy in contests, but it is possible for an SO1R station to place
very competitively, for instance, in a major domestic CW contest. (See
http://ncjweb.com/cwsprint092006.pdf for results of the September 2006
CW sprint. K1TO finishes in 4th place with one radio and only four
band changes).

For more examples, consider the WPX SSB 2007. K1TO operating NJ4M has
the high claimed score, once again with a single radio ( see
http://lists.contesting.com/archives//html/3830/2007-05/msg00004.html
).

Moral of the story...the determining factor is the operator, not the
technology. The best ops tend to operate SO2R, and also tend to beat
most SO1R ops. However, their scores are higher not because they're
using two radios, but because they're great ops.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but if you're a good enough op, you
don't need SO2R to win.

73,
Chris WF3C
