The 870 has excellent audio, but the receiver is mediocre. Pre-equalizing a even several dB won't introduce distortion due to the input and AGC characteristics of the SSM2166 mic preamp IC.

But the best thing is to fix the problem at its source.

The solution is not to compensate for the high and low roll off with
equalizing. That just attempts to force the rig to do something it's trying not to do. the result of that may be distortion and garbage. ideally, the rig should pass the desired response with no effort and the eq. etc. used to
_attenuate_ audio in the proper places. It's interesting that the AM
response, which looks like what you would see with a broadcast transmitter
(except not as wide) would cover the lower frequencies with a nice gradual
tapering going up, but the ssb response is much narrower regardless of the
manufacturer's claim of something like 3.9 khz b/w. if the ssb curve can't be changed, the solution is not to force it but to find another rig with the
desired response. TS870 comes to mind.

Not really - AM response is +/- 2dB from 20hz-3000hz don't get fooled by
the vertical axis scaling

I realize that. Problem is the way the +/- goes. Using 150 Hz as a
reference, it's really a 4 dB DROP from 150 hz to 2400 hz on the AM curve
when the radio is ostensibly set for a "flat" EQ response (TX EQ = 0).

My internal and external EQ settings are quite different on the II than
they
were on the v1. I know, I know, everything is relative :-)
