On our Orion II we use a Heil Pro Sound Speaker that has a built in volume knob to control the speaker volume.

We set the speaker volume on the speaker so when we unplug the Heil boom set be are not blown away by too loud volume.

The world of radio has indeed gotten more complicated and the simple
solutions of years gone by are nothing more than nostalgia! That being
said, it would be nice if there was a "hidden menu" of a mechanical
adjustment where the balance between speaker and headphone volume could be
adjusted since every speaker, every pair of headphones and every shack
listening situation is different.

You're right about the complicated mix of audio: CW sidetone, spot,
SSB/CW/AM/FM from two receivers and SSB/AM/FM transmit monitor. Split
phones, binaural CW, EQ, etc. We sure didn't have to worry about all that
in the days of the Heathkit SB-100!

Simply substituting the speaker output to drive the headphones would be a
waste of some really nice features on the Orions, particularly the ability
to split the two receivers into the left, right or both headphones. That's
not available on the speaker output which is simply a monaural feed.

This string has brought up an important issue that has been plaguing the
Orion's, especially the O2. If I get a chance later today, I may send all
of these posts to Jack Burchfield to see if it can't be fixed in a
subsequent update.

Now if we can only get that goofy S-meter problem fixed!!!!

So, what could have been done simply as it has been done in radios for
65 years has been done in a complex way that prevents the user from
adjusting the relative gains. Or is there a hidden menu option to set
the headphone gain? Shouldn't there be?

Or is it that the Heil noise canceling headset simply demands too much
audio power to work with a typical headphone level circuit?

Is there some other reason for the complexity, audio products that can
be fed to the headphones but not to the speaker, such as transmit audio
monitor?

Would it be practical for the Heil noise canceling headset to add the
closed circuit headphone jack to the speaker with a suitably selected
series resistor as used for many decades? A little box to be connected
between the radio and the speaker with a headphone jack and a headphone
level pot? Without breaking the speaker ground it might take a more
complex jack than a simple closed circuit jack, but such jacks are
available.
