I participate with a club in the VHF QSO Party in June and September,
and in June we experimented with the Flex5000 as an IF radio for the
first time. We used it with a transverter on 222 MHz. The problem we
had was that the operators were occasionally having to click in the
radio control window to make an adjustment (we rarely change
frequencies in that contests, and we mostly one one hand on the
rotator controls). Even experienced computer users would forget to
click back in the N1MM box before attempting to enter a call, and that
would cause problems. That same club also has some problems with
operators making sure that the dialog box of importance has the focus
when they need it. That club seems to be thinking that the Flex5000,
while a great radio for other applications, is not optimal there. I
don't yet know what they have decided, but I would not be surprised if
they go back to their IC-746 or TS-2000 radio as an IF rig.
I like knobs, too. My Omni V.9 provides a reasonable blend of computer
interfacing and analog controls. But I reserve the right to change my
mind in the future, heh, heh.
