I totally concur with Carter. AGC should be ON for most all operation. Even then it is advisable to reduce RF gain to improve Signal to Noise ratio. If you elect to operate with AGC in the OFF mode then you most definitely will have to reduce RF gain.

Hi - just a follow up - I appreciate the advice and wanted to just
ask on Walt's advice versus Carter's. Walt indicated to make sure
the AGC on/off button is in the OUT position (meaning it's off - with
the inference that it's best to not use the AGC on the rig). Then
Carter, you said follow Walt's advice and make sure the AVC is on.
Possibly a dumb question here but is AGC the same thing as the AVC?

Yes, I am using the terms interchangeably for the purpose of this
discussion. Sorry for the confusion, as the front panel calls it AGC.

Is the recommendation from you both to just leave the AGC button in
 the out (or off) position?

No, you have it reversed...

You are most likely getting the original problem you described because
the AGC/AVC is 'off'. To cure this 'problem', you want the AGC "ON". It
is "ON" when the button is in the 'out' position as shown by the legend
on the front panel and as described in Phil's reply.

Good luck with your Omni VI and I am sure you will discover it to be a
really great radio!
